Saint Sophia welcomes you to our 2008 Festival where we are proud to share our food, our music and our culture with our friends in South Florida. Enjoy some mouthwatering ethnic dinners, topped off with a variety of delicious pastries. In the patio, enjoy some excellent souvlaki and loukaniko. Sample the honey puffs, rice pudding and fragrant Greek coffee, along with a Baklava Sundae. Visit our vendors who are displaying jewelry, Byzantine icons, silver, and T-shirts.

The kids will enjoy our games and rides in the area next to the parking lot. The Greek grocery store offers wine from Greece, olive oil and a good selection of cheeses, spoon sweets and mountain Oregano. You will shout OPA! when you watch our famous Greek dancers show our visitors ethnic folk dances. Welcome to Saint Sophia.

Stepping out from the heavenly interior of a Byzantine cathedral and gazing up towards the sky… driving along the southernmost end of I-95 just past downtown and the Brickell business district… flying over the neon skyline of the Magic City…a new glistening landmark dots the old landscape of our fair city—the golden domes of Saint Sophia Cathedral.

Just a few short weeks ago, work was concluded on a monumental undertaking, the gilding of our Cathedral’s great central dome and that of its bell tower with gold-leaf. Following the completion of this project, on a cool, bright Sunday on January 11th, our community celebrated the dedication of that gold-leafing on its domes. That day fulfilled the long-held dream and vision of our late Dean, the Very Reverend Demosthenes J. Mekras, and his wife, Presbytera Exacousti Toula Mekras. Throughout the years, they would remark that a gold dome would be the “crowning glory” of Saint Sophia Cathedral, as it had been for their hometown parish of Holy Trinity Church back in Lowell, Massachusetts all those years before. They envisioned a dome that would shine brightly and be seen from afar, much like the light of Christ shines on His glorious Creation. Thus, the family of Father and Presbytera decided that memorial contributions made in their parents’ names would be designated to honor their dream. Each and every contribution, both great and small, has made this wish a dream come true, and so we respect and honor all donations—each as significant as the other and given with equal sacrifice. Our community would like to take special note and extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. John and Betty Langer for their exceptionally generous donation that allowed for the fulfillment of this project.
